How to Report Online Scam in India: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

What is Online Fraud?

Online fraud includes any criminal activity carried out online using the internet or via connected devices. Examples are:

  • Phishing emails
  • Fraudulent calls (vishing)
  • Credit or debit card misuse
  • Identity theft
  • Account hacking

Under India’s IT Act, cybercrime cases fall under global jurisdiction, meaning you can report them at any cybercrime cell in the country.

Step-by-Step: How to Report Online Fraud

Step 1: Immediately Block Your Debit/Credit Cards

Contact your bank or financial service provider as soon as you spot an unauthorised transaction. Ask them to block your cards to prevent further misuse and report the fraudulent activity to customer care.

Step 2: Collect Proof and Details

Before lodging a formal complaint, gather:

  • Bank statements for the last six months
  • Transaction details (date, time, amount)
  • Screenshots of fraudulent messages or apps
  • Any suspicious links or phone numbers
  • A copy of your valid ID and address proof

These will strengthen your case and speed up the investigation process.

Step 3: Report to the Cybercrime Cell

You have two easy options:

  • Online: You can report it through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. This portal allows you to report various cybercrimes, including financial fraud.
  • You can also visit: cybercrime.gov.in and submit your complaint.

Include your personal details, incident description, and all supporting evidence.

Step 4: File an FIR at the nearest Police Station (If Needed)

If you cannot reach a cybercrime cell, go to your nearest police station and lodge an FIR. As per Section 154 of the Criminal Procedure Code, police must record your complaint, regardless of jurisdiction. If they decline, escalate to the Police Commissioner or a Judicial Magistrate.
